Recovering stroke patient, Jacob, is set to take on a monumental challenge on 7 September – climbing all 246 steps of the Wallace Monument – to raise funds for a new OT kitchen in the Bellfield Centre.
Jacob has already raised an incredible £1,265 towards his ambitious £10,000 target, and his determination has inspired staff and patients alike.
Kathryn Ramsay, Senior Charge Nurse, Wallace Suite, Bellfield Centre, said: “Jake has always been so keen to give back to the stroke team. He frequently visits the ward looking for ways he can help us support the next stroke patient who comes in. As a ward, we’re proud to support him in this adventure, and a few of us will be there on the day to assist him with his climb.”
Jacob’s Story
On 10 March 2024, Jacob suffered a stroke that left the left side of his body paralysed. He spent eight days in ICU, during which time his family were uncertain if he would pull through. His recovery continued with three months in the stroke ward, focusing on intensive physiotherapy to regain strength and mobility, before transferring to the Wallace Suite in the Bellfield Centre for further rehabilitation.
Jacob said: “I am incredibly grateful for the dedication and professionalism of the staff at Forth Valley Royal Hospital and the amazing team at the Wallace Suite who prepared me for returning home. I was discharged on 5 June 2024 with the support of the START (Stroke Transition and Rehabilitation Team) and the ReACH (Rehabilitation and Assessment in the Community and at Home) team. Their home visits and ongoing support gave me the lifeline I needed.”
Now living more independently, Jacob is determined to give something back by raising funds that will directly benefit future patients at the Bellfield Centre.
He added: “I want to thank all the staff in the Wallace Suite for giving me this lifeline.”
Jacob’s climb is not just a personal milestone but also a powerful symbol of resilience, gratitude, and hope for others recovering from stroke.
