Curling Champion Turns Commentator – Vicky Makes BBC debut

Many of us who watched the recent Winter Olympics may have spotted local nurse and Olympic Gold Medallist Vicky Wright (now Drummond) as part of the BBC’s presenting team.

Vicky was part of the GB Women Curling’s team who won Britain’s only gold medal at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. She retired from the sport later than year and was awarded an MBE in the 2022 Birthday Honours for services to curling.

Staff News caught up with Vicky to find out how she found her experience on the other side of the cameras and what she has been up to in the last four years since her team’s incredible gold medal win.

What have you been up to personally and professionally since the last Winter Olympics?

Since the last Olympics I got married and had a little girl Sophie who is 21 months old now and loves curling already, got her own mini brush and likes to get on the ice and push a stone when she can. I’ve been doing a little bit of coaching for a junior girls team for British curling. Professionally I moved to intensive care at the start of 2023, I am absolutely loving it. Staff are brilliant and I am enjoying the learning.

How did you get involved in being part of the BBC presenting team for the Winter Olympics?

The BBC had reached out a year before the games to ask if I was interested which I very much was, I just had had to double check with getting time off work. It was a fantastic opportunity something I had never done before, and I just wanted to give it my best shot.

How did you find your experience of TV presenting?

Vicky Wright It was so nerve-wracking, I was very nervous every time I was on air as this is completely out with my comfort zone. The curling commentary team was brilliant, I knew Jackie and Logan very well from curling, and since the last Olympics I got to know Steve Cram well by attending his charity golf days and our producer Peter was brilliant. They were great at supporting me. Going into the studio and working alongside Clare Balding, Jeanette and JJ was fantastic. Everyone is so down to earth and there to showcase the talented athletes that were competing. We always had lots of fun in studio. The whole BBC team were lovely, and everyone enjoyed what they were doing and also grateful to be in Cortina and experience how amazing the Olympics is.

What were your highlights/stand out moments from the 2026 Winter Olympics?

There were so many standout moments for me at the games. The boys achieving silver in curling again was amazing, they were so close to winning. Team GB ladies put on a fantastic performance and did us all proud, Rebecca’s incredible shot against USA…WOW. But also, I thought Kirsty Muirs big air performance was incredible, for being only 21 she was outstanding.

Did you get a chance to do anything else in Cortina while you were there?

We were staying roughly an hour away but if we had the morning off we went for some really nice walks along the lake. I also got the chance to go over to the sliding centre and watch the training runs of the luge, wow!! They are mental going so fast down the ice on a tray. It was very impressive.

What are your future plans and priorities?

I am enjoying being back at work and just keep learning in ICU. I would love if something else came up on the back of the Olympics with commentating and presenting.
