Karren Morrison took over the role as Employee Director in February 2026 and has worked in NHS Forth Valley since 2004.

She began her career as an Occupational Therapist and became a UNISON representative in 2006, taking on increasing responsibility and becoming Branch Secretary in 2018. Over nearly two decades of trade union involvement, she has championed fair working conditions, supported colleagues through complex challenges and helped strengthen the voice of the workforce across the organisation. Karren is also Chair of UNISON’s Scottish Health Committee, providing senior leadership and support to its health membership across Scotland. More recently, Karren was chosen to represent Unison in the new Scottish Health Industrial Relations and Partnership Forum which will play a key role in the discussions on NHS Scotland reforms.

In this update Karren shares her reflections on the first six months in her new role and her priorities for the future.

“My first six months as Employee Director at NHS Forth Valley have been both rewarding and challenging. It has given me the opportunity to represent staff voices at Board level while helping shape discussions on some of the most significant challenges facing our organisation, including workforce pressures, service sustainability and staff wellbeing.

“I have worked in Forth Valley for many years and understand the challenges and pressures that face staff whilst continuing to deliver high-quality care under the current demands.

“A key part of my role is ensuring the voice of staff always informs the decision-making. I know that strong partnership working between management, staff side representatives and trade unions remains essential as we navigate change together.

“These first six months have also coincided with major decisions on public sector reform and proposals to reduce the number of NHS Boards in Scotland. While there is still uncertainty about what the future may look like, it is vital that staff are involved in shaping any changes. My priority will continue to be ensuring that workforce voices are heard and that partnership remains at the heart of any reform.
