Meet our New Learning Disability Acute Liaison Nurse

433

Jemma Nisbet has recently taken up this role and hopes she will soon become a familiar and approachable face in NHS Forth Valley to support clinical staff in delivering care. Jemma writes:

“I have worked with people with learning disabilities for 16 years.  My interest was due to having a childhood friend who had learning disabilities and autism and we had a special bond.  I have cared for people with all different ranges of complex needs and communication methods.  I am intuitive and enjoy breaking down unspoken communication to find out the meaning behind behaviours which is a skill that is used often in my job. Eight years ago I began my nursing training and I have been a qualified nurse for five years now.  My background so far has been in mental health – both forensics and assessment and treatment.

“I have witnessed on many occasions, people with learning disabilities being discriminated against and not having their health needs identified or met.  This is what has driven my passion for health promotion and helping to reduce the health inequalities often experienced by this group of people.  My new Learning Disability acute liaison nurse post is a new challenge for me and I am hoping that I can contribute towards the good quality patient care provided by Forth Valley Royal Hospital. My aim is to provide a service with clear pathways and guidance for all staff to help achieve better outcomes.

“In my spare time I love spending time with family and friends.  I love travelling and going for nice big remote walks (when it’s not raining!).  I love spending time with my nephew and having family dinners.  I am learning to play the saxophone just now but I don’t think I’m quite at the stage to allow anyone in the public to hear me yet.”
