Neurology Nurse David Thomson, who is based at Forth Valley Royal Hospital, is inviting colleagues to join a running challenge that has transformed his own life whilst helping to provide lifeline services for families across Scotland.

David is about to take on his third My Zen Run for the Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA) after being inspired by one of his clients who helped set up the annual virtual event.

“My Zen Run has helped my wife Teri and I to go from couch potatoes to a much more active lifestyle,” said David, 56. “Last year I did 31 5k runs in one month and we’ve carried on doing much more regular exercise. It has improved our mental and physical health to the point where I’ve signed up for a virtual marathon later this year too. I’m fitter, feel better than I have for years, and I’ve lost more than three stone.”

My Zen Run is held from 1st – 30th September 2021. Runners set their own challenge – it can be one race, a weekly target or the challenge of running each day. There’s something for everyone, with coaches offering advice and encouragement and online group support from fellow runners.

All money raised goes to the Scottish Huntington’s Association to support families with Huntington’s disease through services including specialist nurses, a financial wellbeing team and youth advisors.

Participants are asked to raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship. They each receive a medal for taking part and can also request an SHA running vest to help raise awareness while they run.
