The sight of a trio of walkers wearing Mickey Mouse ears may raise a few eyebrows over the next few weeks.
But fear not as they are a group of friends in training for a 56 mile walk to raise money for the breast cancer support group The Port Edgar Dragons.
It is 10 years since Lindsey Kaney was diagnosed with breast cancer and together with her friends Rachel and Lynda, they signed up for a 36km in Disneyland Paris in September 2021. However, after the event was cancelled, they decided to walk from Glasgow to Edinburgh along the canal towpath. On Saturday 25th September they will walk from Speirs Wharf to Redding followed by Redding to Edinburgh Fountainbridge the next day.
Lindsey, who works in the Urgent Care Centre at Forth Valley Royal Hospital, said: “Instead of letting all our training go to waste we decided to change our running shoes for walking boots. Training so far is going really well by exploring near and far to increase our walking stamina. We have visited Holy Island, Loch Leven, North Third and are making good use of the Ochil Hills for short power walks. We even sometimes dress up in some of the outfits we had planned to wear for the Disneyland run to draw the attention of passers-by and help raise awareness. So don’t be surprised if you see us walking about with Mickey Mouse ears!”
The Port Edgar Dragons is a recreational dragon boat charity which supports the recovery of breast cancer patients and is run by breast cancer survivors. The paddling action of the long boat improves recovery from cancer surgery and reduces lymphedema in the arms. The charity has two longboats, one at bridge 8 on the Union Canal and the other on Lochore Meadows in Fife.
