The superb work carried out by Macmillan Healthcare Support Workers at home has been rewarded recently by two grateful families of loved ones, who each sent cheques for £1,000.
One woman sent her cheque – “To thank all the girls who helped look after her husband. The care and attention he received from each and every one of them was outstanding and I am truly grateful.”
The other donation, from a woman and her daughter, said that they – “Don’t know what they would have done without the girls, and it was fantastic to hear their husband/father/grandfather laughing when the girls were taking care of him. Although they only knew them for a short number of months, they knew them all by name and they felt like part of the family.” The man’s son-in-law was so inspired by the Macmillan team that he cycled around Loch Ness to raise money.
The Macmillan One-to-One Team was also involved in supporting a local Falkirk man who busked for Macmillan outside the Nationwide Building Society. He would regularly bank his takings in the branch for Macmillan, and when he was dying from cancer he continued to busk to raise money for his own funeral, still banking half his takings for Macmillan. The team are now in the process of arranging a plaque for a bench outside the Nationwide branch in his memory.
Jane Niblo, Manager of our local Macmillan One-to-One service, who is based at Airth Health Centre, said: “These generous gifts highlight how much our local staff and services are appreciated and needed by both patients and their loved ones. We have also received feedback from local community nursing teams to say how invaluable the Healthcare Support Workers service is (fondly known as MacTwo), with a very quick response time and easy referral process.”
