Many staff will be familiar with name Dr Pat Beausang, either through his work as a former Consultant in Geriatric Medicine at Stirling Royal Infirmary from 2000 – 2009, or through the annual lecture which is held in his memory at Forth Valley Royal Hospital.

Now his son Louie Beausang, friends and Dr Lynsey Fielden, who was Dr Beausang’s Geriatric Registrar during his time at Stirling Royal Infirmary, are running the Edinburgh Half marathon on Sunday 26th May 2024 in aid of Blood Cancer UK.

Louie Beausang, said: “Dad suddenly passed away sadly 15 years ago this August at the young age of 43, after a brief battle with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. This has inspired me to raise much needed funds for Blood Cancer UK, to help patients like my Dad get through this horrific disease. Because of this, myself and my friends, plus, hopefully, a few of my Dad’s former NHS colleagues will be running the Edinburgh Half Marathon this coming May.

“I specifically chose a running event, as out with his passion for medicine, my Dad was a well-known, avid runner. As a teen, he excelled at running and joined a running club in Cork and ended up clinching 1st place in a very prestigious road race, boasting a time of 24 minutes in the ultimate 8k race.

As he got older, he even managed to achieve a 10k time of 31 minutes. However, having always had his eyes set on his next challenge of competing in a half marathon, this was sadly taken away from him due to his early death at the age of 43. I therefore feel that it is fitting to run this half marathon in his honour and raise well needed funds to possibly help a family like my own who are going through the struggles of dealing with a member of their family with cancer.

“Blood Cancer UK as is very dear to my family as it provided crucial help to Dad and us, both during his illness and afterwards.”
