Talking Patient Safety in Mental Health

The old age psychiatry team, based in Falkirk Community Hospital, recently welcomed Andrew Murray (Medical Director), Stephen McAllister (Non-Executive Board Member) and Lynda Bennie (Head of Clinical Governance) for a return Patient Safety Conversation Visit.

Since the first visit in September 2023, there have been some significant changes for the team, including the relocation of the Dexa scanning service within the Department.

The addition of another service involved huge amounts of preparation and organisation and has led to a greater footfall of patients throughout the Department.

The team were keen to share that whilst the new arrangement has had its challenges, both teams are working well together to ensure all patients attending the Department receive the care they require and are working together to ensure patient safety and satisfaction.

The Mental Health Acute Assessment and Treatment Service (MHAATS) also hosted a recent Patient Safety Conversation visit which provided a fantastic insight into the services they provide. Staff explained how they support patients in the community as well as supporting colleagues and other services across Forth Valley with their knowledge and expertise.

John Stuart (Non-Executive Board Member) and Lynda Bennie (Head of Clinical Governance) also heard about the progressive and proactive approach to patient treatment and care as well as future plans for the service.

The MHAATS team demonstrated a real enthusiasm for their role and for continued commitment to professional development to support the delivery of high quality, holistic care. One service user shared their positive experience of being cared for and supported by the team.

Thanks to both teams for supporting these important Patient Safety Conversation visits and for making colleagues feel very welcome in their areas. Work is already underway to plan return visits in 6 months time.
