In May 2025, NHS Forth Valley introduced a new Rapid Cancer Diagnostic Service (RCDS), to help speed up cancer diagnosis for patients with a range of more general symptoms which could be cancer.

Dr Jonathan Begley, RCDS Clinical Lead, explained: “This initiative aims to provide faster answers for patients and peace of mind for most since the majority of those referred will not have cancer. The primary goal is to rule out cancer quickly, reduce uncertainty, and ensure that anyone who does need further care is identified and treated without delay.

“As Clinical Lead for the RCDS, I’ve seen firsthand the value of a joined-up approach. This service relies on close collaboration between GPs, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, secondary care clinicians, diagnostic teams, and administrative staff. It’s a real team effort.”

How it works:

  • Patients with concerning, unexplained symptoms are referred by their GP or ANP.
  • Before referral, they’ll have a physical examination and blood tests.
  • We ask patients to let their GP or ANP know if they’ll be unavailable in the next three weeks, as appointments are scheduled quickly once the referral is made.
  • The service then moves fast from assessment to diagnosis to minimise uncertainty and help direct patients to the right care as early as possible.

Dr Begley continued: “This model has already been rolled out in five other Scottish health boards, and evidence is mounting that it works. A recent University of Strathclyde evaluation highlighted how the RCDS can improve early detection rates and patient experience — something we’re keen to build on locally.

“We’re proud to join the national effort to improve cancer services and support the Scottish Government’s 10-year cancer strategy. As a team, we’re committed to ensuring every patient receives person-centred, timely, and effective care no matter how their cancer journey begins.

“If you’d like to know more about the RCDS or how to support referrals within your area of work, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. This is a significant development for our health board and your continued support is key to its success.”
