The educational experience provided by our Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Ophthalmology Teams at Forth Valley Royal Hospital has been singled out for particular praise by the national Undergraduate Quality Review Panel (QRP).
Each year, the medical student feedback relating to the clinical placements for each of the medical programmes delivered by Scottish Medical Schools is reviewed by this undergraduate panel. Representatives from each of the medical programmes join representatives from NES and the DME group to review this feedback from many hundreds of placements.
Challenges and success are shared across the group and although medical students value the positive and rich clinical learning environment they receive across Scotland, it was clear to the panel that some teams provided an outstanding experience or had made significant positive changes to the environment which was particularly appreciated.
As a result, both our Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Ophthalmology Teams have been Highlighted for Excellence by the University of Glasgow for positive feedback from students who were pleased with their whole experience in Forth Valley.
Our Gynaecology Team was also praised by Healthcare Improvement Scotland for their work to improve the post-menopausal bleeding pathway. Their commitment to the method, use of data to drive decisions and the involvement of local patients was described as “truly amazing and a textbook example of quality improvement. It’s one of, if not the, best example of using quality improvement to improve access to planned care ever seen. One-stop clinics may be a common intervention but the robustness of the method is amazing and will lead to safe, sustainable change.”
