Highlighting the Role of our Extended Scope Physiotherapists

The role of the extended scope physiotherapist (ESP) in rheumatology has evolved over the last few years.

Initially developed to oversee the management of the rheumatology physiotherapy service and the running of injection clinics, the role now involves us working as first contact practitioners seeing patients directly from the rheumatology service waiting list.

We collectively assess and treat up to 280 patients per month, who would otherwise be waiting to see a rheumatology consultant or doctor. This has a significant impact on the rheumatology waiting list.

Working autonomously and as independent prescribers, we make decisions on the management of patients with inflammatory joint disease whilst having rapid access to consultant opinion.

The ESP team are also leading on the inflammatory back pain service improving access times for patients and maintaining links with physiotherapy.
