Introducing Alison McQueen, Network Analyst in the Medical Physics Department

3

I began my NHS career almost 11 years ago as part of the first cohort of Modern Apprentices in Business Administration. I applied after spotting the opportunity on social media, taking a chance as I was close to the upper age limit of 24. Fortunately, I was eligible and secured a one-year fixed-term post, split between the Medical Physics and Health and Safety departments. During this time, I completed my SVQ Level 2 in Business Administration.

Following my apprenticeship, I moved into a clerical officer role within the Women and Children’s Unit. After a year, I successfully applied for a permanent administrative position in the Medical Physics Department.

Over time, my role within Medical Physics has continued to grow and evolve, allowing me to gain valuable experience and further qualifications. In May 2020, I completed my SVQ Level 3 in Business Administration. More recently, in January 2024, I trained as a certified ISO 9001 Internal Auditor, building on our department’s ISO 9001:2015 accreditation and expanding my skills in quality management and continuous improvement.

One of the things I value most about the Medical Physics Department is its strong commitment to staff development. The team actively encourages learning and progression, offering opportunities to take on new responsibilities, gain professional qualifications and explore different career pathways. This supportive environment has been instrumental in my own development, helping me build confidence and progress in my career.

While I have always enjoyed being part of the Medical Physics team, I felt ready for a new challenge. When the Network Analyst post was advertised in January, I saw it as an excellent opportunity to progress while remaining within a department I’m passionate about. Since starting the role, I’ve really enjoyed developing new technical skills and working closely with the Digital Network team, who have been incredibly supportive with training and guidance.

In my current role as a Network Analyst, I am working towards specialising in the connectivity of medical devices. As more equipment becomes integrated with clinical networks, I help ensure systems operate safely and reliably behind the scenes. It’s a rapidly evolving area, and I’m excited to be part of that progress. Looking ahead, my goal is to continue building my confidence and expertise, becoming a key point of contact within the department for connected medical devices and the systems that support them.
