Kayla MacDonald, an 18-year-old Digital Media student at Forth Valley College, has been awarded the 2025 Radio Royal Robyn Jenkins Memorial Award for her outstanding contributions to Forth Valley Royal Hospital Radio.

The award, named in memory of a much-loved former volunteer, is presented each year to a new member who goes “above and beyond” in their dedication to the station. Kayla received the honour from Radio Royal Chairman Lee Tait at the station’s recent AGM.

Since joining in August 2023, Kayla has quickly become a vital part of the team – not only hosting her own show every Tuesday from 8–10pm (with repeats on Thursday at 6am and Sunday at 6pm) but also taking on significant behind-the-scenes responsibilities. She manages the station’s social media, maintains the website, and works on the production team creating trailers and sponsor content – all while balancing a full-time university course.

Kayla’s journey began with basic presenter training, but her passion and ambition led her to become more deeply involved. Now a member of the executive team, she’s embraced the challenges of broadcasting, production, and station management with energy and professionalism.

“I’m proud of myself for showing up and giving it my all, even on bad days,” Kayla shared. “Receiving this award alongside my qualification is a real milestone, and something I’ll be proud to show future employers.”

She also offered some advice for others interested in a career in broadcasting or digital media:

“Just do it, even if it feels strange! These strange hurdles are only the beginning of something amazing. Volunteering at a local or hospital station is a brilliant way to gain experience.”

Eilidh Gallagher, Head of Person-Centred Care at NHS Forth Valley, praised Kayla’s achievement and the broader impact of hospital radio:

“Radio Royal is a fantastic service, and its success is thanks to hardworking people like Kayla and the many other dedicated volunteers who make a real difference to the experience of our patients and their families.”
