New Interim Director of Nursing

Following the recent departure of former Director of Nursing, Prof Angela Wallace, who has taken up a new role as Director of Nursing for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Gillian Morton will cover this role on an interim basis until a new Director of Nursing has been appointed.

Gillian, who is currently our Chief Midwife, Director of Women and Children’s Services and the Corporate Programme Management Office, has a wealth of clinical, management and leadership experience.

Since qualifying as a nurse in 1984 and a midwife in 1987, Gillian has held a number of senior nursing and midwifery posts and gained extensive clinical experience in midwifery, predominantly in labour wards and community midwifery teams.

In addition to managing services for women and children, she also manages a range of other services including sexual health services, child protection services and the Corporate Programme Management Office (CPMO) which oversees the development and implementation of a range of strategic projects and provides expert guidance and support to staff across the organisation.

A strong clinical leader with both front-line, operational and strategic experience, Gillian has creatively and collaboratively delivered a wide range of changes and improvements in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment. She also has a significant leadership role, nationally and locally, in taking forward Best Start – the Scottish Government’s national plan for Maternity and Neonatal Care.

Gillian’s is passionate about developing people and giving a voice to the families that use the NHS services. She was awarded an MBE in 2020 for her services to healthcare but says her most fulfilling role to date is that of being a granny to four extraordinary grandchildren.
